Many people are of the opinion that voting for the Hall of Fame is flawed in one way or another, and the results of recent certainly indicate that whomever is voting on the players who have the privilege of being inducted could be doing a much better job. That’s not to say that Ken Griffey and Mike Piazza (last year’s HOF class) didn’t deserve to be in the hall, but guys like Bernie Williams, Alan Trammell and Dwight Evans who weren’t elected certainly have a fantastic case for getting elected to the Hall.

Shortly after the announcement, folks on twitter, most notably Kate Upton, who happens to be Detroit Tigers SP and Cy Young finalist Justin Verlander’s fiancée, let the Baseball Writer’s Association of America know that the Cy Young winner they selected was the wrong choice. After any award announcement people will voice their displeasure on Twitter, but the hate for the BBWAA was well-deserved after they greatly botched this vote.

Sale has been one of the best pitchers in the AL over the past three seasons (dating back to 2014), amassing 16.6 total fWAR (fifth-best) and a 10.56 K/9 (fourth-best among qualified starters). If you expand the timeframe to 2012, Sale’s numbers are no less impressive; he sits in the top 10 in K, K/9 and ERA, and checks in at 12th overall, with 1014.2 IP (202 per season).

Of the ten players given qualifying offers this season, Jeremy Hellickson (SP, Phi) and Neil Walker (2B, NYM) were the only players who elected to accept. This makes Hellickson and Walker only the fourth and fifth players to accept their qualifying offer, a paltry number considering that sixty qualifying offers have been extended to impending free agents since the system was implemented in 2012.
